EVENING YIDDISH CLASSES

Yiddish Language Classes Begin at the Boston Workmen's Circle – all levels Monday and Monday evenings, starting the week of September 24th
Location: Workmen’s Circle building - 1762 Beacon Street, Brookline, MA
Class time: All classes are held from 7:30 – 9:00 pm

OUR CLASSES
Beginners:
11 Monday evenings, beginning Sept. 18.  This course teaches students Yiddish reading, elementary grammar and basic conversation skills.  It is geared toward students who have little or no previous background. Students who don’t know the Hebrew alphabet are encouraged to contact the office prior to the start of class.  Instructor:  Harry Bochner.

Advanced Beginners: 12 Monday evenings, beginning Sept. 24.  This course is designed for those who are already able to read simple Yiddish and who have familiarity with basic grammar such as present, past and future tenses. Textbook and supplementary texts, newspapers and music will be used to strengthen grammar, facilitate conversational Yiddish, and to develop reading skills. Instructor: Lillian Leavitt.

Intermediate: 12 Monday evenings, beginning Sept. 24. This course will use vol. 2 of  Sheva Zucker’s textbook, readings by well-known authors, and the Forverts to further students’ vocabulary and reading skills. Students will also be encouraged to expand their comfort with speaking and understanding conversational Yiddish. Instructor: Dovid Braun.

Advanced seminar, conducted solely in Yiddish: 12 Monday evenings, beginning Sept. 24. Come learn about Yiddish history, literature and language from experts in the field, talking about their specialties in Yiddish.  Students should be able to speak and understand Yiddish comfortably and read sophisticated texts on their own with the aid of a dictionary.  Instructors:  Team-taught by David Braun, Sholem Beinfeld and Iosif Lakhman.

OUR INSTRUCTORS:
Harry Bochner
has a PhD in linguistics from Harvard University.  Harry has taught Yiddish on and off for 15 years at BU extension, Harvard Hillel, privately, and at the Workmen's Circle.

David Braun has taught Yiddish language and Yiddish studies at Harvard University, the Univ. of Pennsylvania, Hebrew University (Jerusalem), Gratz College, and at the intensive Yiddish summer programs of YIVO with Columbia University and the Jewish Historical Institute (Warsaw, Poland).
